The Transcendental Meditation technique is based on the ancient Vedic tradition of enlightenment in India. This knowledge has been handed down by Vedic masters from generation to generation for thousands of years. This web site covers the life work of Mahesh Prasad Varma (later known as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) and the Transcendental Meditation technique. Jai Guru Dev:)

This search would take five years to find a teacher who lived up to his ideals - the criteria was simple - his teacher would need to be an enlightened man and a lifelong celibate who had also learned in philosophy.

Maharishi tells one story which illustrates the strict care that Guru Dev took in search of his master.

During his travels the young Guru Dev came across a certain sannyasin who was purported to be an 'enlightened man'. A Sannyasin is a recluse and one who has renounced all material possessions and worldly pleasures. By tradition such people are not allowed to cook their own food for it is part of their austerity that they do not use fire.

When Guru Dev met the sannyasin the first thing he did was to ask if he might have some fire. The man immediately became angered and reprimanded the child for having asked such a thing: didn't he know that sannyasis never had fire and that it was a great insult to request such a thing? Guru Dev simply replied that if he had no fire from where had it flared up?

The man calmed down and recognizing that this was more than a simple child standing before him and entreated the boy to stay and become his disciple. But the boy had seen enough to know that this 'saint' failed to meet his requirements.

Eventually Guru Dev's search led him to Swami Shri Krishanand Saraswati, a great sage of the time. Guru Dev then studied under Swami Shri Krishanand Saraswati at a place called Uttar Kashi, often called 'The Valley of the Saints', quickly becoming his closet disciple and attaining full self-realization. At age thirty-four he left his master's side and retired to a life of seclusion for the next forty years, firstly in a cave in the Himalayas and later in the jungles of Central India.

Even though he was almost completely cut off from any other people, the little contact that he did have with others earned him the reputation as a great, enlightened saint.

In 1941, at the age of seventy-two, after twenty years of repeated entreaties from officials, he went to Jyotir Math in Badarinath in the Himalayas' to fulfill his responsibilities as leader of the Shankaracharya tradition.

Political freedom dawned in India while Guru Dev held this position. He was worshiped by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first president of the Indian union, and the famous philosopher and India's second President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, would refer to Guru Dev as "Vedanta Incarnate," or, the embodiment of truth.

To all who came to him for guidance he taught an ancient meditation technique originating in the vedas, the oldest Indian teachings. He made this teaching available to those leading active lives in the world and recluses alike. Thus establishing the basis for the present world-wide revival and teaching of the Transcendental Meditation program.

At the time of Guru Dev's passing in 1953, Maharishi had spent thirteen and a half years in service and devotion to Guru Dev. Maharishi soon earned a place in history as Guru Dev's most favoured disciple. Through the fullness of the Vedic wisdom of his great master, Maharishi was able to quickly gain mastery of the Science of Being, and become not just a Rishi - a seer of the truth about our universe - but a Maharishi - a great Rishi - who has supreme skill in teaching that wisdom to others, and rising them to experience Being and enjoy its infinite riches.
