Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

(January 12, 1918 - February 5, 2008)

Image: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Born Mahesh Prasad Varma in 1918, Maharishi is the third of four children. Details of his earlier life tend to be vague, because by tradition, Hindus who renounce the material world to devote their lives to asceticism, religion, and their soul's salvation consider themselves newly born. They take on a new name and do not divulge details of their earlier life.

However, we know that Maharishi graduated from Allahabad University with a degree in Physics in 1942. His family belonged to the Kayastha caste, and it was expected that Maharishi would follow the accepted lifestyle of his caste and become a merchant, shopkeeper, scribe or clerk.

Maharishi meet Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Jagadguru Bhagwan Shankaracharya or Guru Dev (divine teacher), in the early 1940's and it was Guru Dev's wish that Maharishi complete his University studies before joining him as a disciple.

Maharishi ascribes his personal development to the 'brilliant light' and inspiration he found in Guru Dev's unbounded and perfect nature. Maharishi spent thirteen and a half years in service and devotion to Guru Dev and quickly developed into Guru Dev's favorite disciple.

Through the fullness of the Vedic wisdom of his great master, Maharishi was able to quickly gain mastery of the Science of Being, and become not just a Rishi - a seer of the truth about our universe - but a Maharishi - a great Rishi - who has supreme skill in teaching that wisdom to others, and rising them to experience Being and enjoy its infinite riches.

After Guru Dev's passing in 1953, Maharishi undertook a reclusive life in Uttar Kashi in the Himalayas'. However, inspired by Guru Dev's desire to make Transcendental Meditation available throughout the world, Maharishi emerged after two years with a process he called Transcendental Meditation.

It was in 1956 that Maharishi began to teach this ancient wisdom to the people of India with his first tour through India. Deeply inspired by the enriching experiences gained through Transcendental Meditation by tens of thousands of people, Maharishi inaugurated the Spiritual Regeneration Movement at the end of 1957. Over the next decade, during ten world tours, Maharishi would visit over 100 nations introducing them to the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Before Maharishi brought Transcendental Meditation to light, meditation was thought to be extremely difficult, involving feats of concentration no one could ever accomplish. It was thought to be painfully slow to produce results, and impractical - only for the recluse lost in otherworldly pursuits, not for ordinary people in the midst of their daily responsibilities.

Maharishi reversed all these understandings in a single stroke. He found from his own experience and from the expressions of the vedic literature that the nature of inner life is Bliss, and that this nature is true for everyone on earth. Pure Being is Pure Bliss. It is everyone's birthright to discover this inner field of bliss through Transcendental Meditation, and enjoy it in the midst of all activity.

But in spite of the time and effort he pours into his work Maharishi never takes any personal credit for his success. If ever any credit is due it always goes to his master, Guru Dev. For this reason he will always be heard to end any lecture or discussion with the phrase 'Jai Guru Dev', meaning simply 'By the grace of Guru Dev'. With this expression he is acknowledging that it is only through Guru Dev that the teaching has been made available again today.
